The only answer I can come up with to this question is that since Galbatorix is Eragon and Murtagh's father, he automatically knows his sons' true names.
With Murtagh's statement, "...He knows our true names..." i'm sure he was meaning him and Eragon because through them Galbatorix could control both of their dragons because as I recall, a dragon and their rider share, i guess you would say, almost the same soul. In other words, you could control both at one time. Therefore, Galbatorix would not need the dragons' true names. However, I could be totally wrong. It's just a thought...
are you kidding me galbatorix is not thier father morzan is! HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!

I didn't really grasp the meaning of someone's true name. What exactly does it mean?

Default no

you two are both wrong. (ismira and whoever was before) not trying to be a jerk but it says very plainly in the second book that brom is eragon's father. Morzan and eragon only share a mother, selena, they are half brothers.

Default true name

In the Ancient language the worlds for everything are the true names of those things. For example brisinger is the word for fire. If you know that word you can control it. A true name is not just a word it describes your entire being. the concept of a true name is kind of an allusion to manipulation. If you know someone well you know how to manipulate them if you know someones true name you have complete control over them.

Wink lol

lol is it only me or were u all atstounded when u foundout BRom was Eragons father? i mean i was so happy i was crying and then i cryed again when Oromis and Glader died...im emotional....
Oh and i reacon that Arya is in love with Eragon because in some parts of the book (usualy befor a battle like when the Varden took Feinster) she wishes him luck and then is apparently about to say something but thinks better of it. Also when Oromis and Glader died she ended up ''being held in his arms as they consould each other'' now that one may just be there greef but Arya would never do that to any1 she didnt hav strong feelings about...

No, Eragon is Brom's son. It is revealed to him in Brisingr. Saphira, Oromis and, Glader Tell him. They all knew from the beginning.

This time when I read it, I get two ways this could be worded.

1. Galbatorix knows both Murtagh and Eragon's true names.
2. Galbatorix knows both Murtagh and Thorn's true names.

But which is the truth? What exactly does Murtagh mean?
Just a thought but it could be like Galby thinking Murt and Erag are brothers. He might THINK that he knows Erag's name but he dosnt and hes just told Murt that so he can scare Erag. Either way i dont think Galby does know Erag's name. If he did he could just command Erag to go to him or to commit scuicide.

COMPLICATED!
